OF late, many shoppers are venturing into sauces and dressings for their kitchens. Indeed there is a great variety of sauces and dressings, but the commonly preferred one is tomato sauce, because of its versatility.

The sauce can be eaten with various foods, for example; noodles, pasta, sandwiches and French fries. In addition, it enhances the taste of food and is enjoyed by people of all age groups.

In this era of credit crunch, you can cut costs of the beloved tomato sauce by making it at home. Below is a simple recipe.

Ingredients
Ripe tomatoes

Garlic

Finely chopped onions (optional)

Procedure
Wash the tomatoes in clean water.

Remove the skin from the tomatoes. The easiest way of doing this is to drop the tomatoes in hot water for a few minutes, after which the skin peels off easily.

Remove the seeds from the tomatoes because they make the sauce bitter.

Chop the tomatoes or crush them using a blender.

In a pan, put some oil, garlic and chopped onions and sauté them until they become light brown.

Add the tomatoes and cook for 5 to 10 minutes. If required add little water.

Add a pinch of salt, pepper and any other spice of your preference.

After 10 minutes of cooking, the mixture becomes coarse and the sauce will be ready for consumption. However, if the mixture has pulp, then you can sieve to remove it.

Set aside to cool.

Store in plastic or glass container and refrigerate. You can also store it at room temperature for 14 days.

Serve cold with any food of preference.
