The policy barring pregnant students from sitting final exams is unfair. It was disheartening when the minister of education said schools were not places for giving birth. The case of a girl who delivered while doing PLE in Masindi was a slap on the minister’s face.

There are key things that Ugandans need to ponder, following the Masindi girl’s case. Does the minister imagine that giving birth is a crime that should seal the fate of the girl-child?

Aren’t there many cases of successful women who continued with studies even after getting pregnant while in school?

I am not condoning pregnancy in school but emphasising the need for equity. Some of these girls are made pregnant by school boys who continue with their studies. It is unfair for the girls to be victimised while the boys go free.

If the law is to be fair, both parties should face equal consequences.

Nature has favoured men in that they do not carry evidence of their sexual activities. This, however, should not be used as an excuse to put a girls’ future in jeopardy.
