UGANDA golfer Stephen Kasaija maintained his composure in the final round to win the Rwanda Open yesterday.

Kasaija carded two-under-par 70 to take over from his countryman Vincent Byamukama as the new champion.

The win was also Kasaija’s first since he returned to the amateur ranks three months ago.

The Fort-Portal based player quit the professional category because of a demanding work schedule.

Kasaija won by seven strokes after sinking birdies on number 14 and 18 in the annual competition sponsored by RwandAir.

“It was a fine day on the course, my target was to at least play level,” Kasaija remarked after the final round.

“Byamukama, really pushed me hard and was very determined to overturn things but he was just unfortunate.”

Byamukama, who was seeking back to back titles, fell short hitting a bogey on hole 16 and 18 after birdies on hole five and six.

Byamukama, also Uganda’s champion, led proceedings after the first two rounds before Kasaija took charge of the event after the third round on Saturday.
