EDITOR—The issue of defilement and rape of girls and women is central to women’s human rights. This is because defilement and rape violate women’s bodies, their lives and freedom over their sexuality. I say bravo to the 14-year-old girl in Bushenyi who defended herself against her would-be defiler.

The invasion of women’s bodies is closely linked to the denial of human rights of those who are not heterosexual, because rape or defilement is possible at the time when the perpetrator sees the victim as a thing or an object.

In the same vein, we have law and advocates that see those who are not heterosexual as less than human and therefore deserving no human rights.

And our specific history clearly makes the link, which, unfortunately is held as the model for modernity.

At this moment in history, all those who advocate women’s rights and women’s rights to sexuality must at the same time fight to make history straight and fight for the rights of those who are not heterosexual.

As the slogan goes: women’s rights are human rights. And human rights must be given to all human beings regardless of sexual orientation, class, region, ethnicity, gender, religion, political party, etc.
