An appeal by Fred Kavuma, a former programme manager at the defunct Uganda Television challenging his conviction and sentence for embezzlement, will be heard at the Court of Appeal today.

On May 13, 2009, Justice Paul Mugamba of the Anti-Corruption Division of the High Court convicted Kavuma of falsely obtaining over sh40m from the Global Fund and sentenced him to five years in jail.

The Director of Public Prosecutions said Kavuma obtained the money, claiming he would sensitise the youth on HIV/AIDS through programmes on UTV, but he did not air a single programme.

Kavuma is seeking to quash the conviction and set aside the sentence as well as the orders for him to refund the sh41.9m he allegedly obtained from the Global Fund.

Alternatively, he seeks to have the custodial sentence reduced in case the appeal court upholds the conviction.
