UGANDA has pulled out of the U-20 women soccer World Cup tournament citing financial constraints. The national team was due to host their Zambian counterparts in the first leg of the first round qualifier at Nakivubo on December 5.

FUFA vice president (technical) Patrick Egwel said yesterday that they had resolved to pull out after consultations with state minister for sports Charles Bakkabulindi yielded no financial bail out.

The decision means that Zambia will sail through to the second round without kicking a ball after they got a bye in the preliminaries.

“We need to raise over sh100m to facilitate referees, the Zambians and our team in the first leg. We also need another sh100m for the return leg. Without government support we are out. We can’t wait to play the first leg because it will attract a fine,” Egwel said after an executive meeting. FUFA will communicate the decision to the world body.

According to FIFA regulations, a team that withdraws after playing the first leg attracts a fine of $9000 (sh17.8m). Uganda ejected Rwanda 3-1 on aggregate after the two preliminary round legs.
