Single young mothers have been urged to continue with their education after giving birth.

The Nabagereka, Sylvia Nagginda, said the belief that girls should immediately be married off when they get pregnant is wrong.

Nagginda was on Saturday speaking while presiding over Mirembe House Day celebrations on Martin Road in Kampala.

Mirembe House is a non-governmental organisation that caters for girls who are abandoned after getting pregnant.
It offers them counselling services and gives the girls vocational training like tailoring and cookery.

Nagginda said young mothers should be encouraged to start income-generating activities instead of being forced to marry.

“You should avoid acts that will put your lives at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS. Abortion is not the solution to unplanned pregnancies,” she said.

Nagginda pledged to raise funds for the house to enable it accommodate a bigger number of girls.

Marcella Mukasa, the house’s chairperson, said the house has 20 pregnant girls and over 100 who have already given birth.
