The district is preparing to host the Banyakigezi Convention from December 27 to 29 at the White Horse Inn. The convention, the first to be held in Uganda, is expected to attract over 1,000 Banyakigezi from Uganda and the diaspora. Previous conventions have been held in America, the United Kingdom and Canada. Prof. Joy Kwesiga, the convener of the Kabale meetings, said the convention was a cultural development programme aimed at unifying the people of Kigezi and upholding their identity. Speaking in an interview, Kwesiga said Kabale was selected to host the convention because it is the centre of Kigezi region. The region consists of Kabale, Kisoro, Kanungu and Rukungiri districts and is mainly inhabited by the Bakiga and Bafumbira.

Kasese school gets computers
- KASESE
The Uganda Communications Commission has donated 41 computers to Kilembe Secondary School to help it establish an information and communication centre. “This donation has increased the number of computers in the school to 75,” said the head teacher, Baritazale Kule. Addressing a meeting on Sunday, Kule also urged parents to cooperate with the teachers to help their children pass. “Parents with children under the universal primary and secondary education programmes should give them lunch, uniforms and exercise books.”

Anti-AIDS drive launched

The district has launched a campaign to promote HIV/AIDS testing and counselling for all. The campaign is aimed at increasing accessibility of the services to the people as they commemorate the World AIDS Day. It was launched in Nsozi parish in Kyangwali sub-county on Sunday. The district coordinator for HIV counselling and testing, Annet Mutagaywa, told the people who turned for testing that the project is funded by the World Bank.
