THE local government minister, Adolf Mwesige, has advised Gulu municipal authorities to give tender priorities to the vendors’ association, as long as they can manage the markets well.

The minister made the remarks while launching Gulu Main Market Vendors’ Association recently at Kaunda Grounds in the municipality. He advised the business community to write to him when they have disputes with the municipal authorities over tenders, instead of going on strike.

He added that the ‘unfairness’ in the tender awards had caused divisions in the municipality. Mwesige said in 2007, Parliament passed a Bill giving an opportunity to the business community to manage their businesses.

“I am happy the association has 3,000 members. Keep this association well and let it grow to become a local investor and employ people,” Mwesige said.

He disclosed that the construction of Gulu main market would cost sh9b, saying the construction would start as soon as Parliament approves the money

He contributed sh1m to the association and promised to discuss with the President to ascertain how much the Government can contribute to the association. Mwesige said the NRM goverment was committed to making Ugandans wealthier.
