Dear Doctor, I have had a problem with my feet for a while now. I have an itch and soreness in between my toes. They also smell a lot. I have tried to use a number of medications in vain. What causes the feet to smell and how can I get help. SK
Dear SK, THE most common cause of smelly feet is a fungal infection in between the toes. This is commonly known as athletes’ foot. These infections are associated with poor drying of the feet which creates a moist environment that favours growth of the fungi.
The infection is not easily eliminated due to the possibility of reinfection from stockings and shoes.
Proper treatment is required to ensure elimination of the infection. In some individuals, an antifungal foot powder used about three times a day is sufficient to control the infection and eliminate it.
In other cases however, a combination of both systemic and locally applied antifungal medications is necessary to clear the infection. Most of these can be bought over the counter.
This is particularly necessary in the case of recurrent or persistent infections.
However, it is important to maintain good foot hygiene and to keep the feet dry. Stockings should be properly washed and dried regularly.
Use at least a clean pair or two daily. Cotton socks are good due to their ability to absorb moisture. Ensure proper drying of your feet after a bath. It may also be helpful to consider wearing open shoes for awhile.
