PRINCE Kassim Nakibinge Kakungulu yesterday married Hasifa Mulisa in a low-key ceremony at Kibuli Mosque.
Nakibinge’s wedding had been kept a top secret and the ceremony at Kibuli was exclusively for invited guests who numbered about 500.
The Police and private guards from Uganda Taxi Operators and Drivers Association (UTODA) provided security at both the mosque and the reception venue. Guests were required to show their invitation cards before they were allowed to access the mosque. They were not allowed to go with cameras.
Prince Nakibinge, who is in his mid-forties and the manager of the Libyan-owned Tropical Africa Bank, is the most influential figure in the country’s Muslim community and heir to Prince Badru Kakungulu.
He is head of one of Buganda’s wealthiest royal families, with an expanse of land in the city and other parts of Buganda. The family descends from Prince Nuhu Mbogo, who was the brother of Kabaka Mwanga.
Nakibinge’s delay to marry had been a source of concern in the Muslim community.
The prince, a cousin to Kabaka Ronald Mutebi, was united in matrimony by the Kampala district Khadhi, Sheikh Suleiman Ndilangwa, belonging to the Kibuli-based faction of Sheikh Zubair Kayongo.
Sheikh Kayongo, who delivered the day’s sermon, lauded Nakibinge for ending the anxiety in the Muslim community.
“Today, we witness history in the making when the long wait by the Islamic community comes to an end. You have exemplified yourself by fulfilling one the teachings of your faith,†he said.
He called upon the couple to be tolerant to each other, have many children and live an exemplary life.
The bride, Hasifa, asked for $100 (sh188,000) for the ‘Mahr’ and lessons in the Koran as dowry.
The prince paid the money immediately and pledged to fulfill her wish to learn the Koran. The bride is apparently a fresh Muslim convert from a Christian family. Sources said she hails from Kabale and city tycoon Amos Nzeyi is her paternal uncle.
Nakibinge, who was flanked by his brother and bestman, Prince Khalifan Kakungulu, and his mother, joined the guests outside the mosque for a thirty-minute photo-shoot that kept organisers and UTODA guards on the look-out for paparazzi.
After the ceremony, the party proceeded to the nearby residence where a reception was held.
The guests invited for the wedding included the Minister for East African Affairs, Eriya Kategaya, internal affairs minister Kirunda Kivejinja and foreign affairs state minister Isaac Musumba.
The Buganda kingdom delegation was headed by the Katikkiro, John Baptist Walusimbi, and included the Kabaka’s son, prince Junju.
Also present was Sheikh Rajab Kakooza, the director of Sharia from the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, based at Old Kampala, although his colleagues were conspicuously absent.
