THE Police and the Judiciary have been advised to protect children from being remanded to prisons.

The state minister for the youth, Jessica Alupo, urged district probation officers, secretaries for children affairs, the Police and paralegals to work towards protecting juvenile offenders from being jailed.

“We are going to inspect all prisons to see if any juvenile offenders have been jailed there, and take due action,” she said.

Alupo was addressing officers in charge of child protection and the prison welfare department at Paragon Guest House in Gulu, recently.

The prison paralegals said they had identified over five juveniles serving sentences at Oyam Government Prison.
They said this was a crime that needed to be addressed and stopped immediately.

The commissioner for children and youth affairs in the gender ministry, Willy Otim, advised the people of northern Uganda to support Gulu Remand Home which is catering for all juveniles in the region. The Government is planning to build remand homes in all sub-regions.
