PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni will receive an honourary Doctorate of Laws from Makerere University for his distinguished service to the nation.
The university spokesperson, Gilbert Kadilo, in a statement on Monday, said Museveni will be given the award in recognition of his support to the education sector, science and technology, industrialisation, and empowerment of women.
The proposal to honour the President was reached by the university senate, the institution’s highest decision making body, at its 139th meeting.
The university cited Museveni’s positive contribution to the education sector through his support for the free primary education programme, expansion of the higher education sector and promotion of agricultural products through value-addition and industrialisation.
Museveni will be recognised for his direct contribution and support to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and to Makerere University as a whole.
The President is also commended for his campaign against HIV/AIDS, the affirmative action policy and establishment of the presidential science awards.
The proposal to award him was initiated and tabled by the Faculty of Agriculture.
The senate is due to submit its recommendations for the award to the university council for approval.
Museveni is the second high profile person to receive an honourary degree from Makerere University in less than a month.
Former Tanzanian President and Makerere Alumni, Benjamin Mkapa, was awarded an honourary Doctorate of Laws on November 27 for his exemplary leadership and performance.
