Many doctors want to come home

EDITOR—I think President Museveni’s promise of improved remuneration for scientists in the diaspora who return home is the biggest joke of the year. I have spoken to many Ugandan doctors who would love to return to Uganda and work to save our people.

EDITOR—I think President Museveni’s promise of improved remuneration for scientists in the diaspora who return home is the biggest joke of the year. I have spoken to many Ugandan doctors who would love to return to Uganda and work to save our people.

But they complain about the unhealthy conditions of a hospital such as Mulago for example, which if it were in Britain it would be closed for posing a health risk to patients. Apart from cleanliness, what do you do as a doctor to save patients without proper medicines or technology and personnel to do ordinary tests? I hope Museveni could stop this delusory reference to science and research (when there’s no funding for it). Doctors and other scientists abroad say, “First give this promised improved remuneration to our hard-working compatriots at home, and we will return.”
