How can I get rid of tumours in my breasts?

Dec 27, 2009

BREAST lumps are usually a source of anxiety in ladies due to their association with breast cancer. However, some of them are non-cancerous and will most likely not cause significant harm.

Ask the doctor with Dr. Gloria Ndagire

Dear Doctor,
In 2008, I had an ultrasound, which showed seven lumps in my breasts. In January, two of them were removed and other two removed in April this year. The results were non-cancerous. I do not want surgery anymore. Are there any medications I can use to remove the tumors? What do I do?
Martie

Dear Martie,
BREAST lumps are usually a source of anxiety in ladies due to their association with breast cancer. However, some of them are non-cancerous and will most likely not cause significant harm.

Unfortunately, it is not very easy to differentiate between the cancerous and non-cancerous ones. This can only be done by surgically removing part of or the entire lump and examining it.

Sometimes, a needle can be used to aspirate fluid from the lump for examination. It is, however, advisable to have all suspicious breast lumps removed since it is possible for a previously non-cancerous lump to turn into a cancerous one.

The likelyhood of this happening cannot be accurately determined. The fact that the lumps, which have been removed so far are non-cancerous does not mean all the others are non-cancerous.

It is best for you to have all of them removed. Breast cancer is more common in individuals with close female relatives, who have had the disease, so it is important for you to get to know more about your family history.
