SELECTION for the players who will participate in the Zone Five Africa basketball championship qualifiers in Rwanda next month will be made by the Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations' (FUBA) technical committee today.

The committee, along with the FUBA’s executive, will convene at Wandegeya for a couple of meetings and high on the agenda will be drawing up the preliminary list of 40 players from whom a final batch of 24, who will be equally be divided up for Uganda’s ladies’ and men’s teams, will be chosen.

The four-man committee will initially select 20 players apiece for either team. A group of coaches who will also be selected today will train and assess the abilities of the players before individually deciding on 12 players apiece.

Uganda’s senior teams have never qualified for the African event and the girls’ U-18 team which is the only team to reach such a level rat last year’s event.

Uganda’s representatives next month will have their work cutout as only a place in the final will guarantee qualification for the African championship which will be held later this year.

FUBA officials say they face a logistical challenge to sponsor both teams but they promise both will definitely travel.
