Great soccer but low turn-up
EDITOR — The 2008 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup will always be remembered for its style. All the ingredients you expect from a good tournament are there. Goals were in plenty plus of course the shocks that saw the early exit of heavyweights like Sudan and Zambia.

The only missing thing to all this colour were the crowds. Most of the matches were played before empty stadia partly because of the prohibitive gate charges and unconventional kick-off times — the most weird being at half-past midday in the semi-final match between Kenya and Tanzania.

All this connived to produce empty stands — a scene that was certainly terrible for tournament sponsors GTV. I propose that in future, children and other less privileged groups be allowed free entry.

Curb the violence

EDITOR — I watched in dismay as a Tanzanian player on Friday hurled a bottle at a soccer fan at Nakivubo and was so disappointed by footballers’ discipline in this region.
It’s high time organisers CECAFA took very serious measures to ensure that rogues are kept out of the competition.
One reason crowds have faded from local football in this region is violence
