STRIKER Brian Umony is determined to build on his CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup success when KCC FC compete in the Africa Champions League later this month.

Umony helped the Cranes to their tenth CECAFA title on Tuesday after claiming the all-important lone goal against Kenya.

The Kyambogo University economics student guided KCC to their first title in ten years last season on the way to landing the landmark personal achievement of being honoured the 2008 FUFA Footballer of the Year.

“I didn’t expect to emerge top scorer. But one thing is I always try to do better and that is what has helped me through my career,” the 21-year-old Umony said.
“I believe the experience I have obtained from participating in the CECAFA championship will help me perform to my best in the Africa Champions League with KCC,” Umony added.

With KCC FC’s preparations for their first leg engagement against Mozambique’s Ferrovario on January 30 gathering pace, Umony says there will be more to come in the club’s continental showpiece.

“I am a better player now.Now I know how it feels to win something, it makes me even hungrier to win trophies with KCC.”

After nearly three weeks of CECAFA Challenge Cup action, focus returns to the local scene today with the Kakungulu Cup while the Uganda Super League second round starts tomorrow.
Army side Simba will launch their Kakungulu Cup campgain against Jogoo Young at Bombo ground today.

After losing three of their regular starters, Simba coach Sam Ssimbwa is pursuing the services of former Uganda international midfielder Hakim ‘Boda boda’ Magumba to increase the club’s attacking pace.

Ssimbwa yesterday confirmed that they had already secured a release letter from Rwandan club Attraco for the midfielder.

Willy Kavuma (Oman), Sula Sebunza (Australia) and Isaac Isinde (Serbia) have all left the club for greener pastures, leaving the team’s attack blunt.

“We cannot definitely say that we are well off with regular starters leaving. I can confirm that we have secured a release letter from Attraco but we still have to speak to Magumba before we call him our player,” said Ssimbwa.

Today’s match also presents an opportunity for Ssimbwa to redeem his image after his team fell out at the quarter-final stage last year.

Ssimbwa’s charges bowed out against Express and the coach came under heavy criticism for the team’s laid-back attitude.

Ssimbwa, who helped Express win the Kakungulu Cup in 2006 before crossing to the Bombo side, dismissed allegations that he tried to help his former side survive elimination in that game.

Turning to today’s game, Ssimbwa said he is not bothered by Jogoo, the academy side of SC Villa.
Jogoo eliminated Baza Holdings to advance.

The teams meet in the last game of the 32-team round. The winner will join 15 other teams already through to the next stage. At the same time, the league resumes at Nakivubo tomorrow with the Police team battling Sharing.
