EDITOR—I respond to a letter by Mr. Martin Makara about the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation’s Luganda station, Star FM 87.5. Makara was dismayed that during its breakfast show on Tuesday morning, Star announced a job vacancy for an “Indian General Managerâ€.
He erroneously thought that the job being advertised was for Star FM! I would like to clarify a few things for Mr. Makara.
Star FM, like any competitive FM stations, has various segments within its line-up that help inform and enlighten their listeners. One such slot is a Luganda version of the “Job Slotâ€. This is a two- minute segment that allows the presenter to read out from various sources, the job adverts in Uganda that might interest their listeners.
On the Tuesday in question, our presenter read out over 10 job vacancies, one of them being from a company that specifically wanted a Ugandan Asian. So Mr. Makara can be comforted in knowing that the job in question was not advertised by Star FM.
The law that governs Star FM, namely the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation Act Cap 105, entitles UBC and all its stations to be all-encompassing to Ugandans. It is to fulfil this mandate that we come up with such concepts like the ‘Job Slot’ to keep our diverse listeners informed. UBC is committed to providing quality broadcasting services.
