THE Governement has drafted tough laws to stop the importation and production of fake products, the trade minister has said.

“The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is also establishing a pre-export verification of conformity (PVOC) programme.

“This is aimed at stopping the importation of dangerous goods, very old vehicles and counterfeit products,” Janat Mukwaya said.

This was at the inauguration of the National Standards Council, which will oversee the implementation of standards by the UNBS.

The council is composed of Dr. William Ssali (chairman), Prof. Joyce Kikafunda, Dr. Moses Kizza Musaazi and Prof. Eliab Lugujjo as members. Others are Prof. Richard Adome, Dr. Terry Kahuma, Rogers Enyaku, Dison Okumu, Eng. Samuel Ssenkungu and Hajat Sarah Lubega. Mukwaya said the Government would amend the UNBS Act to provide for stronger penalties.
