THE army in Arua has recovered 11 head of cattle that had been captured by Congolese soldiers. The animals belonged to Elisa Badu of Amika village in Logiri sub-county.
The animals were seized on Monday, over allegations that they had strayed into gardens in the Democratic Republic of Congo and destroyed crops.
The Congolese soldiers had demanded a ransom of 10 goats and money before they could release the animals.
Logiri LC3 chairman Yovan Adriko said he, the regional internal security officer together and ten Ugandan soldiers reclaimed the animals on Thursday.
“We got the cows detained at a Congo government detachment at Aliba, about 3km from the border,†Adriko disclosed.
“During our dialogue, we established that the allegations of crop destruction were false and that the soldiers wanted to extort money from the owner,†he said.
Adriko commended the Congolese commanders for their cooperation, but asked the officers to instill discipline in their forces.
He said it was the fourth time in less than a year that naughty Congolese soldiers had captured ugandan cattle and demanded for an unnecesary ransom.
It is alleged that the Congolese soldiers on the border with Uganda have not received their salaries since 2005, thus explaining their unethical behaviour.
The UPDF recently established a detachment in Logiri on the request of residents who claim to be mistreated by soldiers from Congo.
Adriko said there was need to open more detachments in strategic areas.
