THE Government has purchased a six-acre piece of land to relocate Katwe-based artisans, the investment minister has said.

Prof. Semakula Kiwanuka said the Government would provide infrastructure like water and electricity at the site on Salaama Road, off Entebbe Road.

He disclosed that artisans in Nakawa and Kawempe would also be relocated.

“This follows a directive from the president to create business, science and technology, and information communication technology parks, export processing zones, free ports, special economic zones,” he said on Friday after touring the Kampala Business and Industrial Park (KIBP) at Namanve.

“By developing Namanve as a fully-fledged business and industrial park, the Government is using it as a model to brand an image of a modern Uganda because the economic strength of a country shapes the business activities of the parks.”

Kiwanuka said he had directed the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) to make allocation of land in a transparent manner by publishing the criteria they would follow.

“Strict planning and building regulations must be observed and enforced to provide an attractive and healthy working and living environment,” he said.

He said UIA had bought 619 acres of land in Mbale worth sh3b and the Luzira Industrial Park at sh2.6b.

He said land would also be bought in Soroti and Gulu.

Arthur Tukahiirwa, the UIA director for industrial parks responsible for Namanve, said the first phase of opening up land for investors to start implementing projects ends in April.

“As at January 22, we had opened 12km of roads, which we want to prepare to sub-grade level.
The second phase will be to pave all the roads, build a power sub-station, extend electricity from Kiwanga thermal plant and a sewerage treatment plant to park,” he said.

Tukahiirwa said the first phase would also include a flyover on Jinja Road, whose construction would begin in June and a 3km railway line.
