THE FDC candidate in the just-concluded Isingiro Woman MP byelections, Stella Kyakuhaire Kafureeka, has conceded defeat.

In a letter to the district returning officer copied to the chairman Electoral Commission (EC), Kyakuhaire congratulated NRM’s Grace Byarugaba upon winning the elections.

She also urged her supporters to work closely with Byarugaba as they await another election.

Kyakuhaire said there were irregularities, but stated: “In the interest of the people of Isingiro and Uganda at large, I hereby accept the results announced by the Electoral Commission in favour of my opponent Grace Byarugaba.”

She had earlier rejected the results alleging malpractices. Byarugaba polled 58,968 votes (80.2%) and Kyakuhaire got 14,534 (19.8%) in the January 19 polls.

However, in an interview with The New Vision in his office on Friday, the leader of the opposition in Parliament, Prof. Ogenga Latigo, said the FDC would challenge the results, because of massive rigging. “We have compiled evidence of harassment of voters in specific areas,” Latigo said.

“FDC’s chief mobiliser Maj.Gen. Mugisha Muntu, monitored some areas. He said the voters told him that armed men dressed in army uniforms had torn-up identification letters for our agents and forced them to flee the polling stations,” Latigo said.

He said in Bukanga, Isingiro South constituency, the number of ballot papers cast were more than the number of registered voters.
