The Mufti, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, has advised Muslims to reject the group that is opposed to his leadership. Mubajje said his opponents were aiming at tarnishing his image and splitting the Muslim community.

“A moment comes in life where every leader undergoes such challenges. Jesus faced persecution and so did Prophet Mohammed, not because they were wrong in their search of the truth,” he said.

Mubajje was speaking after the commissioning of the new Abdulrazak Ibrahim Khamis mosque in Amuria district last Wednesday.

The Mufti and two members of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, Hassan Basajjabalaba and Dr. Edris Kasesene, were last year dragged to court on accusations of selling off Muslim property.

The court, however, dismissed the case last November, sparking off protests from Mubajje’s opponents including radical sheikhs Nuhu Muzaata and Abdul Hakkim Ssekimpi of the Tabliq sect.

The opponents last month announced a decision to appoint their own leader, a move that threatened to divide Uganda’s Muslims.

“Those people should not tell you lies about Mubajje’s woes. What they should instead do is to inquire about your challenges as Muslims and look for possible ways of redress. Islam is a peaceful faith and whoever acts violently is not a true believer. Such acts make us a laughing stock,” Mubajje said.

The construction of the mosque was funded by the Africa Muslims Agency. Dr. Farahat Alkishty, the country director, said the project was one of the five mosques that the organisation built in Teso sub-region.

Alkishty added that they also plan to construct a multi million dollar orphanage to serve the districts of Katakwi, Kumi, Kaberemaido, Soroti and Amuria.

President Yoweri Museveni, in a speech read by the Third Deputy Prime Minister, Kirunda Kivejinja, commended the group for supplementing the Government’s efforts in developing the country.
