THE $1.8b (about sh3.6 trillion) investment at the Kampala Business and Namanve Industrial Park near Kampala is expected to create 35,000 jobs, a top official estimated last week.

Arthur Tukahiirwa, the director for industrial parks at the Uganda Investment Authority, disclosed that up to 212 applications were received from various investors but only 163 were pre-qualified.

“So, the 163 have an investment value of $1.8b and are expected to create 35,000 jobs,” Tukahiirwa told reporters over the weekend. He disclosed that another batch of 140 applications would be subjected to same prequalification selection criteria.

“Some criteria the investors must meet include being an export-oriented and value-addition project, level of investment, jobs to be created and whether one is investing in our priority sectors,” Tukahiirwa noted.

He said the construction of the infrastructure was expected to be completed by 2011.

Tukahiirwa added that a new programme was underway to counter the effects of HIV/AIDS that might arise due to the developments in the park.

“A qualified team of medical personnel was hired by the contractor to sensitise the workers and the general public about the risks associated with HIV/AIDS.

“We have weekly workshops for the workers,” he said.
