EDITOR—I read with amusement Ben Kiwanuka’s letter suggesting that European soccer contributes to poor performance in our schools. He advises therefore that vidoe halls should be closed. He says that soccer, African or European cannot help students to become useful citizens! It seems he reads from a different script that a majority of us do not access.
The cause of poor performance in our schools is far from students spending time watching soccer. In fact soccer instead improves their performance as long as it makes them relax and reduce stress. Has he ever heard of personalities like Pele or Roger Miller?
Was he in Kampala when George Weah came and what impact he had in Kampala? We are all concerned about the declining performance of students in schools but when he chooses to factor in soccer and apportion such blame to it, he misses the point.
Why do we have a ministry of education merged with sports? Such uninformed opinions are not useful!
