THE upcoming FDC party delegates’ conference will elect a party president, but not the flag bearer in the 2011 presidential elections, party president Kizza Besigye has said.

Besigye said: “The president of the party need not be the presidential candidate. The presidential candidate can be anybody even outside our structure. If we realised that another person has the best chance of winning, then we can vote that person to be our presidential candidate.”

He was yesterday appearing on The News Maker slot of the Early Edition programme on Vision Voice radio.

In a separate interview, party spokesperson Wafula Oguttu said the election of the FDC presidential candidate would take place next year as provided for in the party constitution.

Former army commander Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu on Monday declared his intention to compete with Besigye for the party presidency.

Other aspirants are Kassiano Wadri, Abdu Katuntu, Reagan Okumu and Amanya Mushega.
Besigye said: “I am glad we have made it attractive to have some people ready to share the burden, to be taken to Luzira and be charged with rape.

That is what we go through.”
He said he was not seeking a third term, rather a second term in office.

Besigye said his inaugural term as president was confused with his presidential candidature in the 2001 and 2006 elections.

Besigye was elected as FDC president for the first time in 2005 during the inaugural delegates’ conference.

He said if re-elected, he would serve his term and not seek a third term.
