OVER 500 families in Makindye-Sabagabo sub-county in Wakiso district risk being displaced by Mengo authorities.
The Buganda Land Board (BLB) recently erected a signpost directing residents of Kirinda, Buggu, Busabala and Ziranumbu to stop trespassing on Kabaka’s land.
Disturbed by the development, the residents removed the signpost and Mengo responded by ordering the arrest of a man identified as Fred Katongole. The locals threatened to demonstrate and harm any Buganda official seen in the area if Katongole was not released.
After securing Katongole’s release, they demanded to meet the BLB.
The BLB estates manager, John Kamoome, told a heated meeting at Busabala playground along the shores of Lake Victoria on Friday that the area was a reserve on the Kabaka’s 350-square miles of land.
“The Kabaka will never chase you away. But the fact is, this is gazetted land and if he wants to do any development here, he can choose to compensate or resettle you somewhere else,†Kamoome explained.
