You don’t need a spouse to have fun

TOMORROW is Valentine’s — the day of romantic love. Every year when February arrives, love is on the mind and in the heart.

People go to great lengths to make Valentine’s spectacular for their partners and while this day spells loneliness and gloom for some single people, they can still choose to celebrate the lovers’ holiday.

Melinda, a 28-year-old banker, says she spends Valentine’s with loved ones and for many years, whether she is dating or not, she also gets her mum and siblings gifts. Her mother is the only parent she has known since she was a child.

Her mother is the rock of the family and the family uses every opportunity to let her know how much they appreciate her even on Valentine’s, a holiday that is globally celebrated as a day for expressing love.

That begs the question; can your parents be your valentine? What about your sister or brother? How about a platonic friend? Susan says she and her girlfriends spent Valentine’s together a couple of years back.

They met at a restaurant, enjoyed a good meal, wine and went dancing later that night. No guys were allowed to join the group.

She says everything has changed since then, it basically demystified the holiday and she does not care who she spends it with as long as it is with someone she loves.

Dennis, on the other hand, says the day is strictly for romance and since he is proudly single, he plans to spend it playing tennis and later will go out to his usual hangout at night.

Do you feel like making tomorrow a special day even if you do not have a partner? Go out and get gifts for your loved ones. Your parents probably do not have plans since many people in Uganda regard Valentine’s as a youthful holiday.

Getting the perfect present is not as hard as you may think. A relaxing weekend away is a great gift. For the single mother, a day at the spa getting pampered is a nice gesture.

If you do not have a lot of money to spend, a meal at a nice restaurant would be ideal or better still; you could get a chef to prepare a home-cooked meal.

Your bestfriend too can be your valentine. Spend the day together; go to the movies, go shopping or just go to his or her place.

A parent can take their children out to a fancy restaurant or buy them gifts.
Do not miss out on the opportunity to tell them that they mean the world to you.
