THE acting Kampala district khadi, Sheik Abdulkadiri Mbogo, has appointed eight new Twale (division) Muslim leaders to replace those who defected to the Kibuli-based breakaway faction opposed to the Mufti Sheik Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje.

THE acting Kampala district khadi, Sheik Abdulkadiri Mbogo, has appointed eight new Twale (division) Muslim leaders to replace those who defected to the Kibuli-based breakaway faction opposed to the Mufti Sheik Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje.
Mbogo, who was appointed by Mubajje a fortnight ago to replace Sheik Kasule Ndirangwa who defected, announced the changes yesterday at the Gadaffi National Mosque in Old Kampala amidst ululations and chanting of ‘Allah Akhbar’ by the new leaders.
“The new appointments have been effected to streamline administration in Kampala districts. The leaders are supposed to start serving immediaterly,†said Mbogo.
Eight county sheiks broke away from the mainstream administration of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council based at Old Kampala following the installation of a rival mufti, Sheik Zubair Kayongo.
The breakaway group accuses Mubajje of illegally selling Muslim property.
Mbogo warned the newly-appointed sheiks to be loyal to Mubajje, saying he was the rightful head of Muslims.
“The anti-Mubajje group are persecuting him for nothing. Mubajje mobilised funds to build the Gadaffi mosque and many Muslim projects have taken off during his administration,†Mbogo explained.
The current standoff in the Muslim community was sparked off in 2006 when some Muslims accused Mubajje of fraudulently selling a number of Muslim property on William Street and Port Bell Road in Luzira, Kampala.
The conflict ended up in the court, with Mubajje, city businessman Hassan Basajjabalaba and former UMSC secretary general Edris Kasenene facing criminal charges.
The trio was acquitted by court.
But the anti-Mubajje faction rejected the court ruling and installed Sheik Kayongo as their Mufti.
