AFRICAN top seed Edwin Ekiring will be among the favourites for the Roofings International tournament that starts Thursday at Sharing Youth centre.

“He has confirmed participation. He is coming and it will be good for the Ugandans to watch him play,” said tournament director Simon Mugabi yesterday.

This will be Ekiring’s first home tournament for a year, and he is expected to jet in tomorrow afternoon for Africa’s top ranked tournament.

Ekiring, the first badminton player to represent Uganda at the Olympic games and a quarter-finalist in last year’s event, will use the competition as a warm up for the All England Open next month.

Ekiring’s participation will give Uganda more hope after the tournament referee German Herbert Ott, announced last week that players from Austria, Mauritius and Cameroon had also confirmed participation in the second edition of the tournament.

The tournament has a cash prize of $5,000 (sh9.7m) for the top performers. The eventual winners will also get 3,000 World Badminton Federation rank points.
