SIRONKO - The LC5 boss, Wambi Kibaale, has replaced his entire executive committee with a new one. Robert Kizobo has been appointed the new vice-chairman, replacing Patrick Kiberi. Hussein Masaba, the town councillor, is the new secretary for works and technical services. This was at a meeting in Asher’s Resource Centre presided over by the speaker, Perez Mango.

Drying produce on road banned

NAMUTUMBA - The Police have banned residents from drying agricultural produce on the shoulders of Tirinyi road. Speaking to local leaders and residents during a workshop on Wednesday, the district Police commander, Patrick Echeku, said cassava and sweet potatoes render the road slippery when it rains and can cause accidents. He cited Nawaikona and Mazuba as the areas most used for drying produce.

‘Head teachers diverting funds’

TORORO - The district education officer, Yona Gamusi Doya, has accused the head teachers of government-aided schools of diverting the Universal Primary Education capitation grant. Speaking at a certificate awarding ceremony at Victory Border Point School in Malaba, Doya said the high rate of failure in last year’s Primary Leaving Examinations was because the head teachers had failed to supervise schools.

$1.5m health centre in offing

TORORO - A $1.5m health centre is to be constructed in Papoli village in Iyolwa sub-county this year. It will be built by Village Partnership International, an American NGO, said Emmanuel Okongo Ofumbi, the regional director for Africa. Ofumbi said the centre would have an operation theatre, a facility for children infected with HIV/ AIDS, a laboratory, out-patients department and a general ward.
