AT LEAST 25 contestants are to take part in the second Uganda National Barista Championships.

The executive director of the East African Fine Coffees Association, Philip Anthony Gitao, said the competitions slated for February 19 at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel would have international and local judges.

Gitao said the competitions aim at creating appreciation of coffee among the youth in order to boost consumption.

He said this during the sixth East African Fine Coffees Conference and Exhibition at the Kigali Serena Hotel.

The 25 contestants include: Uganda Coffee Development Authority, Kampala Serena Hotel, Sheraton Kampala Hotel, BAN Café, Café Pap and Catch the Sun.

Shane Devereux, a barista from Canada, said the competitions had improved coffee quality at the retail level, adding that the quality was higher than it was one year ago when the first contest was held at the Kampala Serena Hotel.
