Professor Tanga Odoi is the new chairman of the Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA).
MUASA is an association that aims at improving the institution’s staff welfare.
Odoi, a lecturer in the Faculty of Arts, takes over from Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba, whose four-year term ended last week.
Handing over to Odoi last week, Nuwagaba said: “We have ensured that MUASA is of considerable significance.â€
“It is an association you cannot ignore if you want to successfully manage higher education,†he added.
Nuwagaba warned his successor of the challenges ahead, particularly the poor conditions under which the staff work.
“You have to lead people who are not motivated,†he warned. Nuwagaba said five years ago, the Government agreed to pay a minimum basic salary of sh2.8m to MUASA members, but this had not been improved, yet the cost of living had gone up.
