THE Omukama of Bunyoro Kitara, Solomon Iguru, has accused district land boards in the kingdom of selling his land to immigrants and investors.
“The Hoima district land board gave my land to the pastoralists in Kyangwali sub-county. This group is armed and they have beaten my people and destroyed my houses,†he said.
Iguru was addressing kingdom ministers and local leaders from Hoima, Masindi, Bulisa and Kibaale districts at the palace, in Hoima on Thursday.
He asked the leaders to tell the land boards to desist from selling the Kingdom’s land.
Iguru expressed concern over the rampant land disputes in the region.
The Omukama also dismissed reports that he supported the Land Bill, saying he only asked the President to abolish the mailo land system, which he said robbed the Banyoro of their land.
Iguru said the system was introduced by the British to reward the Baganda for promoting colonialism.
This system of land acquisition, Iguru added, turned the Banyoro into squatters on their own land.
Bunyoro deputy prime minister Proscovia Bamutura said selling land would weaken the Kingdom.
