THE Eastern and African Fine Coffees Association (EAFCA) has started the search for Uganda’s top barista.

A barista is a person with expertise in the preparation of espresso-based coffee drinks.

The winner is to represent Uganda at the annual World Barista Championship (WBC), scheduled for April 16 to 19 in Atlanta, Georgia, US.

The event is the world’s largest coffee competition, drawing competitors from over 56 countries.

During the local competitions at the Kampala Sheraton Hotel on Thursday, baristas from 27 hotels and coffee cafes tried to outwit each other for top prize.

Each competitor prepared four espressos, four cappuccinos and four original signature drinks of their own creation to exacting standards.

Of the initial 27 entrants, 15 made it to semi-finals, but only six qualified for the finals on Saturday.

The competitors were evaluated by five judges on the taste of beverages, cleanliness, creativity, technical skill and overall presentation.

EAFCA is an association of coffee producers, processors, marketers from the 10 Eastern and Southern African countries.

“We sponsor the competitions as a way to promote domestic consumption of specialty coffees and to promote African coffees to the rest of the world,” Mbula Musau, the association’s quality and marketing manager, explained.
