Anthony,

A development study is a multi-disciplinary course which addresses issues concerning development.

It deals with issues related to social and economic development, in and sometimes outside the developing world. A development study is offered as a three-year course in many Ugandan universities at undergraduate level. These include: Makerere University, St Lawrence University, Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi and Uganda Christian University Mukono. At Nkumba, this course is offered at diploma level.

However, in some universities, especially those outside Uganda, this course is offered more as a specialised Masters; degree and less commonly as an undergraduate degree.

Development studies has grown in popularity as a subject of study since the early 1990s and has been most widely taught and researched in the third world and in countries with a colonial history, such as the UK.

Students of development studies often choose careers in international organisations such as the United Nations or the World Bank, non-governmental organisations , private sector development consultancy firms, and research centres.

Development studies is a broad field. It involves a variety of disciplines, including demography, development theory, development economics, development anthropology, development geography, development management, economic history, geography, sociology, philosophy and ethics, political history, politics, international relations, human security, women’s studies, demographics, migration studies, ecology, pedagogy and social policy.

In many of the universities mentioned above, you would qualify for a degree course in development studies. This is because admission to this course does not usually depend on the specific subjects done at A’Level or at diploma level.

You have an option to apply to any of these universities either through the direct entry scheme or through the diploma scheme.

However, ensure that in addition to prescribed entry requirements of the university of your choice, you have the minimum requirements, which usually is a minimum of two principle passes at A’Level in two subjects taught in secondary schools. A diploma (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised institution would also enable you get the course.

It all depends on your future career goals and how you want to achieve them. Be clear about what you want and the rest will work for you.
