THE dfcu Bank is to open branches in Kiruhura and Isingiro, Julius Mugambagye, the Mbarara branch manager, has said.

This will make it the first bank to open branches in the two rural districts of south-western Uganda. Mugambagye was speaking during a public dialogue organised by the Institute of Corporate Governance of Uganda at Hotel Classic in Mbarara over the weekend.

The dfcu Bank-sponsored dialogue attracted political and opinion leaders and the business community from the south-western region.

“We already have 10 branches in Kampala and 10 upcountry. “next month we shall be in Hoima and Jinja.

“However, our focus this year is to open branches in Kiruhura, Isingiro and Kasese districts, for which we have already done the feasibility studies,” Mugambagye said.

Ignatius Byaruhanga, the Isingiro LC5 chairman, expressed happiness over the development.

Mugambagye also said the bank would extend its working hours at the Mbarara branch from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.

The bank has been operating from 8:00am to 4:00pm. He added that they would soon start giving salary and semester loans and increase the number of automatic teller machines (ATM) across the country.

“Customers can also access ATM services from any Finance Trust, Orient Bank, CMF or Cairo International bank outlet with whom we have a working relationship under the Bankom network services,” Mugambagye said.

There are more than 14 banks in Mbarara town seven of which opened recently. Sam Owori, the institute chief executive officer, said the performance of any firm is a reflection of the quality of its board.

Owori was discussing a paper on the “Principles and practices of corporate governance”.
