MUSLIM leaders from the seven West Nile districts have pledged allegiance to the Mufti of Uganda, Sheik Shaban Ramathan Mubajje. The group led by the Arua district Kadhi, Sheik Ahmad Amin Maga, also warned the breakaway faction headed by Sheik Zubair Kayongo from conducting their activities in the region.

They described as illegal the election of Kayongo as Mufti, saying it did not follow the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council constitution.

In a joint communique released after a meeting at the Arua Muslim district headquarters on Sunday, the leaders said: “We disassociate ourselves from the unconstitutional and illegal election of Sheik Zubair as Mufti and his faction is hereby warned not to attempt exporting their confusion and unconstitutional processes to West Nile.”

They said they were prompted to make the declaration following reports that Kayongo's group was planning to reach out to the grassroots to popularise their movement.

“If they want to convince us, they should go by the constitution but not taking over a constitutionally elected Government,” said Sheik Amin Maga.

The communiqué was signed by the district Kadhi of Yumbe, Sheik Swaib Alahai, the Madi district Kadhi, Sheik Abubakar Kokoa, Nebbi district chairman, Sheik Abdulhamid Kagwa Riji, and the Arua Muslim district chairman, Abubakar Banga.
