CANCER has taken many lives and it is a pity that many of us do not know how to prevent the deadly disease through the simplest way possible.

The simplest way to prevent cancer may be through a proper diet. However, with the coming of the fast foods, many people eat whatever comes their way, without any regard for the consequences.

Dr. Sande Senyonga of Dama Medical Herbs says cancer is the same no a matter where it attacks. In most cases the causes and preventions of cancer are the same.

He says there should be a steady supply of nutrients in the body so that the dead cells are replaced. “The body should be given the food it needs,” Senyonga says.

Causes of cancer
According to Dr. Pamplona Roger in ‘An Encyclopedia of Foods and Their Healing Power’ food substances, or other agents that promote the development of cancer are called carcinogens.

He says the most common carcinogens are tobacco smoke, food additives such as nitrites, chemical contaminations such as pesticides, some viruses, molds, and radiation. The most promunent causes are:

Meat
Many scientific studies, both experimental and statistical have revealed that meat consumption increases the risk of cancer (brain, lung, stomach, kidney, urinary bladder, uterus, ovarian, and prostate cancer).

Dr. Senyonga says the meats that are dangerous are beef, lamb and pork. “Meat, whether cooked grilled on a barbecue, fried, salted or cured such as ham, bacon, and sausages can lead to cancer.”

Alcoholic beverages
All alcoholic beverages promote cancer, even those considered to have medical value such as wine and beer, when consumed in large quantities, could induce cancer, but this risk is present even with moderate consumption.

“A glass of wine a day increases the risk of breast cancer in women by 25%,” Dr. Pamplona says. He adds: “there is a relationship between consumption of alcohol and cancers of the mouth, larynx, oesophagus, breast, lung, liver, pancreas, colon, and urinary bladder.”

Eggs
There is evidence that excess egg consumption (more than three per week) could cause cancers of the breast, stomach, lungs, pancreas, colon, endometrium and ovaries.

Foods that prevent cancer
According to Dr. Jennifer Mugisha a nutritionist at Mulago hospital all the anti carcinogenic foods like fruit, salads, and fresh juices, are additional treatment resources that should not be ignored.

There is evidence that they slow down the development of malignant cells, demonstrates their use as a therapeutic tool. Fruits and vegetables are the most effective anti-carcinogenic foods. Studies conducted throughout the world have shown that abundant fruit consumption prevents most of the cancers.
Foods that help in prevention of different types of cancer are soy, soy milk, vegetables, like carrots , spinach, olive oil, garlic, yoghurt, fibre and foods rich in vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E Wholegrain bread and pasta, tomatoes, dried fruits (dates and raisins), fructose, tomatoes, legumes, onions, green leafy vegetables, pineapples and rice help deter different types of cancer.
