RACHAEL Kakaire is an amazing young woman. How else would you describe someone, who went to Makerere University, completed a course in education, but later opted to go to a “hands-on” institute?

In fact, she says, her time at the university was almost wasted. “After graduating, I went and started working in my brother’s stationery shop without choice,” Kakaire recalls.

After seeing an advert on TV she decided to register for a course in motorvehicle repair at Spear Motors Apprenticeship Training Centre.

Now, dressed in a bluish overall, Kakaire moves from one car engine to another replacing air filters. She works at Toyota Uganda.

“I would have started working in my first year if I had taken on this technical course from the beginning,” she says.

If you think your future is doomed because you failed to make it to the university, consider following the path that Kakaire did.

Kakaire says while joining vacational institutions, one can still make poor judgements. “Many students” who intend to join the vocational institutes are not guided and do not know who to approach for consultation.”
