The Indian Women’s Association in Uganda organised a beauty pageant on February 7 at the Golf Course Hotel in Kampala. Mrs. Krishna Patel, 27, was crowned Mrs India-Uganda. The mother of one is married to Ghansyham Patel, the General Manager of Karuri Pharmaceuticals. Rehema Aanyu spoke to her about marriage.

You are married! Why did you enter the contest?
Everyone has a childhood dream and this was mine. I think being married is a blessing and as a married woman, I felt it right to participate in the pageant and show the world this fact. I see myself as an ambassador for the married women.

Did your husband approve of it?
Yes he did. He was very supportive, caring and loving. I dedicated the title to him, my parents, God and the Indian Women’s Association of Uganda for giving us the opportunity to shine.

He must be lovely! How did you meet?
Our marriage was arranged. My parents met his parents at their friend’s wedding reception. They knew each other and thought their kids should marry. My parents just came and told me they got me a man from a very good family and that I would be happy with him.

What was your opinion when you finally met him?
We met for the first time after our parents’ discussions. He was a very cool guy and very handsome. He was working in Uganda at the time and came to India for the wedding. So we talked about his work and got to know each other more. He was and still is a good natured guy who never gets angry. I moved to Uganda with him after the union.

So, is there any love?
I fell in love with him after our marriage. He was my first and is my last love.

And you paid dowry for him?
My parents and relatives gave him and his parents gifts. I did not look at it as dowry but as gifts given to him to put in the house that we were going to live in. To me these gifts were ours which gave us a good start.

Do you think you would have made a better choice had you met your own guy and married him?
No, I don’t think so. I am a strong believer in arranged marriages because I know a parent will never make a wrong choice for their children. Parents always wish their children the best. I respected my parents’ choice and I am very proud of it.

What is your message to married women?
They should always support their husbands, trust them and be happy with them.

Why do you think husbands cheat on their wives?
How am I supposed to know? I do not think they have any credible reasons. It’s only them who can tell us why. My husband and I are very happy in our marriage.
