ATLEAST 60 Imams in Kayunga district from the Muslim divisions of Bbaale, Namagabi and Nazigo have crossed from the leadership of the embattled Mufti Sheikh Shaban Mubajje and joined the newly elected Kibuli based rival Mufti, Sheikh Zubair Kayongo. The Imams said Mubajje had lost the moral authority to lead Muslims after selling off Muslim property.

Led by the deputy district Khadih of Mukono-Kayunga, sheikh Abdul Noor Kakande, the Imams declared their support for Kayongo at Namagabi UMEA Secondary school on Wednesday during the hand over of new bicycles to 60 Imams in the district. The bicycles were given by Nakyewa Muslim Development Association, a faith based organisation that collects Zakah (tithe) from Muslims in the district.

Kayongo asked the Muslims to disrespect any person whose acts were contrary to the teachings of the Koran. He warned Muslims against greed.

Prince Kasim Nakibinge Kakungulu, who was the chief guest, asked Muslims to hate people who mishandle Muslim property, adding that their close friends should be hated too: “Such people should be left in isolation because their activities are against the Islamic faith,” Nakibinge said.
