OVER 38,000 people who were affected by the LRA war will benefit from a community water and sanitation project.
Standard Chartered Bank in partnership with Uganda Water and Sanitation NGO Network, commissioned the project on Saturday in Gulu district.
The residents of Paicho internally displaced camp, where the project was launched, said in addition to poor access to safe and clean water, especially in the resettlement areas, some natural water sources were contaminated.
“The project will bring water closer to your homes. It is our hope that increased water consumption will enable the community to live with more dignity,†the bank’s executive officer, Lamin Manjang, said.
He said three boreholes had been rehabilitated at Cwero, Omoti Hill Primary School and at Lukodi. “We have installed two water harvesting tanks at Omel Apem village and Paicho Primary School,†Manjang added.
The archbishop of Gulu, John Baptist Odama, hailed the bank for the continuous effort to supplement Government initiatives of improving the welfare of Ugandans.
“I call upon other organisations and individuals to emulate this example,†Odama said in a speech read by the archdiocese vicar-general, Monsignor Mathew Odong.
The district secretary for works, Alex Otim, warned the residents against vandalising the boreholes.
