THE world soccer governing body FIFA has conveyed its condolences at the death of Ugandan footballer Alex Katete.

FIFA president Joseph Blatter expressed shock and sadness at the passing of Katete. He died of a heart attack last week in India, where he featured for second division side George Telegraph.

In a letter to Albert Colaco, general secretary of the All India Football Federation, Blatter wrote: “It with a sad heart that I write to you today, having learned of the tragic passing of Alex Katete.”

The condolence message also posted on the FIFA website adds, “On behalf of FIFA and the worldwide family of football, I wish to extend to the Ugandan football community and, most importantly, to Alex Katete’s family, friends and loved ones our sympathies.

“Please let them know that today the football community stands by their side. We would hope that in some way, our words of support may bring a little bit of peace and solace in this time of sadness.”

FUFA yesterday extended a sh2m contribution for burial arrangements to Katete’s family.
