BUNYORO kingdom has appealed to the residents to desist from selling their land

BUNYORO kingdom has appealed to the residents to desist from selling their land, reports Pascal Kwesiga.

The kingdom’s deputy prime minister, Proscovia Bamutura, said: “It pains me that that you are selling land to non-Banyoro. If you feel like selling land, offer it to fellow Banyoro.”

Bamutura was presiding over the International Women’s Day celebrations at Kabwoya Primary School in Kabwoya sub-county in Hoima district on Sunday.

“You will become extinct if you continue to sell land. How can you sell your heritage to other people?” she asked.

In a veiled reference to settlers in Kibaale and Buliisa districts, Bamutura said: “This is not sectarianism. Bunyoro has had 52 tribes for long. The problem is the tribes that invaded us recently and grabbed chunks of land.”

Bamutura, who is also the head of the cabinet, asked leaders and all stakeholders in the kingdom to unite to protect their land.

“Our grand father Kabalega died fighting for this land. He was imprisoned and his hands were cut off. So why should we let it go?” she asked.

Bamutura said the Omukama of Bunyoro-Kitara, Solomon Gafabusa Iguru, had formed an alliance with ministers, MPs and district leaders to devise ways of solving Bunyoro’s problems.
