GREAT art heals souls. Uganda has had its fair contribution of such art. In drama, Butterflies of Uganda (2006) was nominated for a Pulizter award. The reviews it received were full of praise and even with its hard-hitting dialogue (I was conceived in a rape), went beyond shocking the world.

Why the Birds Sing to Me is another with the potential of making it big on the world stage. Like Butterflies of Uganda, it is about the effects of the Kony war.

After an experience of composing for two pantomimes with Kampala Amateur Dramatics Society, the director, Jeffrey Harrison, gets more artistic authority in this musical drama that invokes pity.

He has taken his actors from the north where the events this story narrates took place, to give it a better interpretational edge.

Set during wartime in northern Uganda, the drama depicts the story of the children who were abducted and later returned.

It is the story of a young girl (Treasure), who was abducted and a young boy (Innocent) who, in friendship, follows her deep into the world of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).

Their story weaves tragedy, love, hatred, hope and redemption. It imparts a sense of accomplishment, while inspiring hope for the future.

The play has been staged at various venues in Gulu and for the Crown Princess of Denmark.

Many productions are advertised as musicals. This is the only one of the few that deserves such a description. It is one production worth watching by every popular dramatist.
