ISAMEL “Sharp Shooter†Muwendo will this weekend have his first professional fight in the US.
Muwendo, 2-0-0, takes on Felix Martinez in a four-round fight at St. Paul Armory, Minnesota. He left for the US last month.
“Training has been going great. It is very obvious that Ismail’s coach in Uganda has been doing a superb job with him,†noted Muwendo’s manager Scott Tolzmann. “He looks better than ever. This is a tremendous complement to his Ugandan coach.â€
Muwendo has been sparring with the likes of featherweight prospect Willsaun Boxley (6-0) and fellow Ugandan junior welterweight Mohammad “Assassin†Kayongo. Tolzmann observed that during sparring, Muwendo has showed much maturity by picking his spots and using his range effectively.
“Ismail is already starting to make a splash in the US. As long as he continues to stay focused, he’s going to do great,†predicted the manager.
Muwendo, a member of Uganda’s 2007 World Championship team in Chicago, made his professional debut in 2008 when he beat Charles Kasumba at Arua’s Amure Park. He returned to the ring two months ago with another win over Friday Mugoya.
* Uganda’s hottest boxing prospect Sharif “Lion Warrior†Bogere, will return April 3 against a yet to be named opponent as he seeks to maintain his unbeaten streak in the ring, adds Phillip Corry.
The unbeaten super featherweight who is (6-0-0, 3 KOS) will be a co-feature of the main event of Yuriorkis Gamboa and Jose Rojas at the Buffalo Bill’s Star Arena, Nevada, in the US.
The undefeated Las Vegas-based fighter has developed a unique style of entry into the ring dressed up in a lion costume and caged with four African warriors carrying him. This entry was developed by his managers as a marketing strategy which has made him gain a good fan base in his adopted home land.
Bogere has registered six wins since turning professional last year and three of them by knock out.
