What opportunities does computer engineering, public health, offer?
Sir, I would like to pursue a career in computer engineering. What is entailed in this course and what career opportunities does it have? Alternatively, I would think of a Bachelor of Public Health. Which institutions offer this degree and what career opportunities does it offer?

Before you decide on taking on any of these courses, you ought to understand what each of them entails. Computer engineering (also called electronic and computer engineering or computer systems engineering) is a discipline that combines elements of electrical engineering and computer science.

Computer engineers are electrical engineers who have additional training in software design and hardware-software integration. They are involved in many aspects of computing, from the design of individual microprocessors, personal computers and supercomputers, to circuit design.

Computer engineers write software and firmware, design analog sensors, mixed signal circuit boards and operate systems. They are also suited for robotics research, which relies heavily on using digital systems to control and monitor electrical systems like motors, communications and sensors. Some of the areas covered in this course are: algorithms, computer architecture and organisation, computer systems, engineering, circuits and signals, database systems, digital logic and digital signal processing, among others. Some of these are not common in Uganda.

Meanwhile, public health is “the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health. This course is offered by Makerere University through its Institute of Public Health in Mulago and Mbarara University of Science and Technology at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels. Uganda Christian University Mukono offers related courses — bachelor of community health and a masters in public health leadership.

Some of the disciplines covered in public health include: health management, occupational health, environmental health, health policy, communicable infectious diseases, food, hygiene, nutrition, statistics, sanitation, epidemiology, among others.

On completion of a public health course, graduates can work well in theory and practice in the core public health disciplines of epidemiology, statistics, social sciences, health policy and health economics.

Have your priorities right. Be clear about your career goals. Computer engineering is not common in Uganda. But by choosing public health, you will have chosen a completely different field. How does this help your career prospects? Be clear about what you might have to give up and listen to yourself before you leap.
