BEING an entrepreneur is more than just starting a business. It is about having attitude and the drive to succeed in business.

Students will be supported to learn business skills to compete in the new global economy in a series of workshops.

“This initiative will have a profound impact on students’ ability to succeed in the job market,” says Josephine Kaleebi, the CEO of Junior Achievement Uganda, the firm running the project.

Junior Achievement is the world’s largest organisation dedicated to inspiring and preparing young people to succeed in a global economy.

It provides in-school and after-school programmes to students with a focus on work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. Students will learn how to interact with their colleagues, present oneself in a professional manner, and how to formulate and achieve their career goals.

“We are committed to developing opportunities for young people in the new global economy. Sustainability and wise use of all resources — human, natural and capital — benefit everyone,” Charity Jinya, the managing director of Barclays Uganda, the sponsors of the project.

The bank has given $30,000 (sh60m) to Junior Achievement (JA) Uganda to run the project dubbed the “Barclays/JA Worldwide You can be Initiative”.

The bank’s head of corporate affairs, Michael Kaddu, says there will be a launch of “B-INSPIRED innovation camps’ in five schools around Kampala.

Students from these schools will be presented with a business challenge and will collaboratively devise a solution, using the skills they have learned from Junior Achievement’s entrepreneurship curricula.

Each of the schools will then implement the “B- SMART” student-run companies to foster entrepreneurial thinking and business acumen among students. This will see students devise, produce and market product while earning a profit for their company’s shareholders.

The last component of the programme, “B- YOUR DREAM” has been designed to connect JA graduates to local entrepreneurs who will, hopefully, invest in them and help them realise their dream.

Barclays employees will also take part in “B-EXPERIENCED”, an on-site career mentoring initiative. Here, students will get first-hand knowledge about what it takes to be successful in the workforce.
